Does your child have difficulty falling asleep, wake frequently during the night, or experience nightmares? Sleep disorders and their treatment approaches.
Sleep disorders are prevalent in childhood and exert detrimental effects on daytime functioning, academic performance, and emotional well-being. Sleep onset difficulties, nocturnal awakenings, somnambulism, night terrors, and nightmares represent the most common sleep disturbances.
Sleep Hygiene Principles
Maintaining consistent sleep and wake times, avoiding screen exposure before bedtime, establishing a calming bedtime routine, and optimizing the sleep environment are foundational interventions.
Behavioral interventions are effective for the majority of pediatric sleep disturbances. When behavioral approaches prove insufficient, underlying medical or psychiatric conditions should be systematically investigated to guide further management.
