Does your child involuntarily blink, grimace, or produce unusual sounds? Essential information about tic disorders.
Tic disorder is a neurological condition characterized by sudden, rapid, repetitive, and involuntary motor movements or vocalizations.
Motor tics include eye blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder shrugging, and limb movements. Vocal tics include throat clearing, sniffing, and hiccup-like sounds.
Tics typically emerge between 6 and 10 years of age. Mild, transient tics may resolve spontaneously without treatment. Tourette syndrome represents a more severe and chronic tic disorder characterized by the presence of both multiple motor and at least one vocal tic persisting for more than one year.
Evidence-based behavioral interventions, particularly Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) including habit reversal training, constitute the first-line treatment. Pharmacotherapy may be considered for moderate to severe cases that significantly impair daily functioning.
