Does your child experience frequent anger outbursts? Understanding the etiology and treatment of anger control difficulties.
Anger is a normative emotion; however, when dysregulated, it can lead to significant interpersonal and developmental consequences. Frequent and intense anger outbursts, destruction of property, physical aggression toward others, and self-injurious behavior warrant professional evaluation and intervention.
Etiological Factors
Impulse control deficits, traumatic experiences, exposure to domestic violence, comorbid ADHD, and emotional regulation difficulties may contribute to anger dysregulation in children.
Treatment Approaches
Anger management techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, social skills training, and family therapy constitute the primary interventions. The therapeutic goal is to teach the child to identify anger triggers, implement coping strategies, and express anger through adaptive and socially appropriate channels.
